- Masks client identifiers: client names, matter numbers, Bates numbers, and bar numbers are replaced with realistic fakes before the prompt reaches the AI provider. This is the substantive privilege protection: real client identifying information never leaves the device.
- Lets published case law pass through: verified case citations and statute citations pass through to AI unchanged so legal research actually works. AI can reason about real precedent without ever seeing your client’s details.
- Recognizes protective order content: flags “CONFIDENTIAL”, “ATTORNEYS’ EYES ONLY”, and “SUBJECT TO PROTECTIVE ORDER” markings so the substantive content underneath gets the highest level of masking. Helps you avoid contempt-of-court risk from sharing protected discovery with AI.

It does not detect material non-public information. MNPI is semantic, not a pattern — “we are acquiring Northwind next quarter” contains no identifier to match. What it catches is the identifiers that accompany deal work. Full detail on the finance page.

Card and bank account numbers are covered for every customer in the standard tier, not held back for the finance edition. We also publish what we do not catch — ask for it before you buy rather than after.
Common questions
What counts as a “user”?
Any employee with an endpoint agent installed or a browser extension connected to your server. Inactive or deprovisioned users don’t count.
Can I start with one tier and upgrade later?
Yes. Upgrading is instant, add-ons are enabled per-organization with no reinstallation required. Your agents automatically pick up the new capabilities on their next policy sync (within 5 minutes).
I’m a solo attorney. What’s the difference between Legal Essentials and Legal Pro?
Legal Essentials gives you the core privilege protection: privilege markers stripped, protective order content recognized, matter and Bates numbers masked, case law passes through to AI. That’s the Heppner defense at $20/user. Legal Pro adds firm-tier features like matter management, ethical walls between matters, ABA 512 compliance reports for malpractice insurance, and firm-wide compliance dashboards, things you only need if you have multiple attorneys, conflict-of-interest concerns, or formal compliance requirements.
How does veild.ai compare to a BAA with an AI provider?
